I’m sure a lot of people wondered why, singer/actress/dancer, Willow Smith shaved her head at the age of 12. She did it during her “Whip My Hair” tour. Many felt it was an act of rebellion, however, this may not be completely true.
During an interview with InStyle, Smith said, “I was just over it. The truth of the song is ‘do want you want;’ it doesn’t actually have to do with hair. ‘Whip your hair’ is just a symbol for doing whatever you want. So in a way, I feel like it wasn’t even a rebellion because the song was saying that, and I was doing whatever I wanted and just being wild — but obviously, it was a rebellion to people who thought it meant something different. I was just over it; I was literally so done and said, ‘I’m going to show people that I’m not attached to this.’”
Smith also told InStyle that her parents taught her to embrace her true self, which in my opinion is a great thing. With so much influence from society and the media, it’s great to see a young lady who loves herself and refuses to conform. No one is perfect, but I feel that Willow Smith has done a great job dealing with the spotlight and remaining true to herself in an industry that makes it so hard, especially for women and girls.
